The first book of Maccabees I have found to be Hebrew, the second is Greek, as can be proved from the very style. In the prologue to Esdras he mentions 3 and 4 Esdras as being apocrypha. The former of these I have also found in Hebrew, titled not Ecclesiasticus as among the Latins, but Parables, to which were joined Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs, as though it made of equal worth the likeness not only of the number of the books of Solomon, but also the kind of subjects. The second was never among the Hebrews, the very style of which reeks of Greek eloquence. And none of the ancient scribes affirm this one is of Philo Judaeus. Therefore, just as the Church also reads the books of Judith, Tobias, and the Maccabees, but does not receive them among the canonical Scriptures, so also one may read these two scrolls for the strengthening of the people, (but) not for confirming the authority of ecclesiastical dogmas. The Apocrypha and the King James Bible By Bryan C. Ross Why did the King James Translators include the Apocrypha in the 1611 edition? He mentions the book of Baruch in his prologue to the Jeremias and does not explicitly refer to it as apocryphal, but he does mention that ? But when I repeat what the Jews say against the Story of Susanna and the Hymn of the Three Children, and the fables of Bel and the Dragon, which are not contained in the Hebrew Bible, the man who makes this a charge against me proves himself to be a fool and a slanderer; for I explained not what I thought but what they commonly say against us. Barber cites Jerome's letter to Eustochium, in which Jerome quotes Sirach 1. Like the manuscripts it was based on, the Gutenberg Bible lacked a specific Apocrypha section. The Prayer of Manasses was located after the Books of Chronicles, and 3 and 4 Esdras followed 2 Esdras (Nehemiah), and Prayer of Solomon followed Ecclesiasticus. Luther Bible. His Bible was the first major edition to have a separate section called Apocrypha. Books and portions of books not found in the Masoretic Text of Judaism were moved out of the body of the Old Testament to this section. For this reason, these works are sometimes known as inter- testamental books. The books 1 and 2 Esdras were omitted entirely. As an authority for this division, he cited St. Jerome, who in the early 5th century distinguished the Hebrew and Greek Old Testaments. Although his statement was controversial in his day. He did not put them in a separate named section, but he did move them to the end of his New Testament. He moved three books not found in the canon of the Council of Trent from the Old Testament into an appendix . The section contains the following. These are the books most frequently referred to by the casual appellation . These same books are also listed in Article VI of the Thirty- Nine Articles of the Church of England. The Puritans used the standard of Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone) to determine which books would be included in the canon. The Westminster Confession of Faith, composed during the British Civil Wars (1. The Confession provided the rationale for the exclusion: 'The books commonly called Apocrypha, not being of divine inspiration, are no part of the canon of the Scripture, and therefore are of no authority in the church of God, nor to be any otherwise approved, or made use of, than other human writings' (1. Matthew's Bible, published in 1. Apocrypha of the later King James Version in an inter- testamental section. The 1. 53. 8 Myles Coverdale Bible contained an Apocrypha that excluded Baruch and the Prayer of Manasseh. The 1. 56. 0 Geneva Bible placed the Prayer of Manasseh after 2 Chronicles; the rest of the Apocrypha were placed in an inter- testamental section. The Douay- Rheims Bible (1. They include 3 Maccabees, along with 1 Esdras & 2 Esdras. The 1st edition omitted the Prayer of Manasseh and the Rest of Esther, although these were included in the 2nd edition. The French Bible (1. Pierre Robert Oliv. Following the other Protestant translations of its day, Valera's 1. Reina Bible moved these books into an inter- testamental section. Modern editions. Since that time most modern editions of the Bible and reprintings of the King James Bible omit the Apocrypha section. In the 1. 8th century, the Apocrypha section was omitted from the Challoner revision of the Douay- Rheims version. In the 1. 97. 9 revision of the Vulgate, the section was dropped. Modern reprintings of the Clementine Vulgate commonly omit the Apocrypha section. Many reprintings of older versions of the Bible now omit the apocrypha and many newer translations and revisions have never included them at all. There are some exceptions to this trend, however. Some editions of the Revised Standard Version and the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible include not only the Apocrypha listed above, but also the third and fourth books of Maccabees, and Psalm 1. The American Bible Society lifted restrictions on the publication of Bibles with the Apocrypha in 1. The British and Foreign Bible Society followed in 1. The Orthodox Study Bible, published by Thomas Nelson Publishers, includes the Anagignoskomena in its Old Testament, with the exception of 4 Maccabees. This was translated by the Saint Athanasius Academy of Orthodox Theology, from the Rahlfs Edition of the Septuagint using Brenton's English translation and the RSV Expanded Apocrypha as boilerplate. As such, they are included in the Old Testament with no distinction between these books and the rest of the Old Testament. This follows the tradition of the Eastern Orthodox Church where the Septuagint is the received version of Old Testament scripture, considered itself inspired in agreement with some of the Fathers, such as St Augustine, rather than the Hebrew Masoretic text followed by all other modern translations. These texts are not traditionally segregated into a separate section, nor are they usually called apocrypha. Rather, they are referred to as the Anagignoskomena (. The anagignoskomena are Tobit, Judith, Wisdom of Solomon, Wisdom of Jesus ben Sira (Sirach), Baruch, Letter of Jeremiah (in the Vulgate this is chapter 6 of Baruch), additions to Daniel (The Prayer of Azarias, Susanna and Bel and the Dragon), additions to Esther, 1 Maccabees, 2 Maccabees, 3 Maccabees, 1 Esdras, i. Esdras is added as an appendix in the Slavonic Bibles and 4 Maccabees as an appendix in Greek editions. In common usage, however, the term pseudepigrapha is often used by way of distinction to refer to apocryphal writings that do not appear in printed editions of the Bible, as opposed to the texts listed above. Similarly, the Book of Enoch, Book of Jubilees and 4 Baruch are often listed with the pseudepigrapha although they are commonly included in Ethiopian Bibles. The Psalms of Solomon are found in some editions of the Septuagint. Classification. Since these are derived from the Septuagint, from which the old Latin version was translated, it follows that the difference between the KJV and the Roman Catholic Old Testaments is traceable to the difference between the Palestinian and the Alexandrian canons of the Old Testament. This is only true with certain reservations, as the Latin Vulgate was revised by Jerome according to the Hebrew, and, where Hebrew originals were not found, according to the Septuagint. Furthermore, the Vulgate omits 3 and 4 Maccabees, which generally appear in the Septuagint, while the Septuagint and Luther's Bible omit 2 Esdras, which is found in the Apocrypha of the Vulgate and the King James Bible. Luther's Bible, moreover, also omits 1 Esdras. It should further be observed that the Clementine Vulgate places the Prayer of Manasses and 3 Esdras and 4 Esdras in an appendix after the New Testament as apocryphal. It is hardly possible to form any classification not open to some objection. Scholars are still divided as to the original language, date, and place of composition of some of the books that come under this provisional attempt at order. Again, the Slavonic Enoch goes back undoubtedly in parts to a Semitic original, though most of it may have been written by a Greek Jew in Egypt.)A distinction can be made between the Palestinian and the Hellenistic literature of the Old Testament, though even this is open to serious objections. The former literature was written in Hebrew or Aramaic, and seldom in Greek; the latter in Greek. Next, within these literatures there are three or four classes of subject material. Historical,Legendary (Haggadic),Apocalyptic,Didactic or Sapiential. The Apocrypha proper then would be classified as follows: -- Cultural impact. So coming home, I presently went to my Bible, to see if I could find that saying, not doubting but to find it presently. Thus I continued above a year, and could not find the place; but at last, casting my eye upon the Apocrypha books, I found it in Ecclesiasticus, chap. This, at the first, did somewhat daunt me; because it was not in those texts that we call holy and canonical; yet, as this sentence was the sum and substance of many of the promises, it was my duty to take the comfort of it; and I bless God for that word, for it was of good to me. That word doth still ofttimes shine before my face. IVP Academic, 2. 01. Location 1. 47. 8- 8. Kindle Edition).^Readings from the Apocrypha. Forward Movement Publications. Applying to any MBA program is a challenge; the test, the essays, the agonizing. But targeting the schools that grace the lists of top ten MBA programs can be particularly grueling. No you don’t need to speak five languages or already have a noble prize but the competition has become stiff. It’s a more competitive pool now. Even just having the resources like MBA Podcaster, I think applicants are taking a lot more time to develop competitive applications and are doing research.”. So beyond listening to our podcast what can you do to make your application stand out to a top ten school? That answers may surprise you. Sky high GMAT scores and a perfect GPA are good tools to bring to the table but they are not guarantee. And if your scores aren’t on the red hot end of the spectrum you are by no means out of the running. There are plenty of ways to show you have what it takes. On this edition of MBA Podcaster admissions staff members from three top schools give their advice and we hear from an author and consultant who has helped 1. He says the advice in the book applies to any program, “Whatever is likely to be helpful to someone in getting into a Harvard, a London, a Stanford will be doubly helpful when it comes to trying to get into less august school.” Montauk says while the numbers aren’t everything, the first step for an applicant to look at the average GMAT score for the schools where they are applying but he says remember that an average is just that, it is the middle. So if you have a lower than average score you can still get in. If it seems that the top schools are too much of a reach with your current status then there are more questions to ask. Are there career goals such that there will be a big career pay off to go into a top ten school? Similarly they should be asking themselves what can they do to improve their credentials. Are they going to be able to get a promotion? Are they going to be able to take on more responsibility? Could they do something outside of the office so to speak to demonstrate their talents? Could they take on a substantial leadership role in some community activity?” Montauk says many people take themselves out of the running for the top schools unnecessarily, “At age 1. Five or six or seven years later they may be looking at it quite differently and they may be quite different people at that point.”. In other words, “Life is a journey filled with learning experiences. Don’t let past history prevent you from capitalizing on the talents you have today.” That’s Rose Martinelli, Director of Admissions for the Chicago Graduate School of Business. Yeah we’ve had engineers and your consultants and bankers and kind of more traditional types of people come through but we’re seeing increasingly folks who are in government and non- profit, the arts industry, in media, in real estate who see the value of managing resources, managing people and markets which is what a MBA teaches you how to do.”. And Richard Montauk says it’s a myth that only students with undergraduate degrees from top schools get into top MBA programs. It’s the individual’s performance that is going to count here, not the school they went to. Admittedly, one has to do a little bit better at the proverbial acme university than at Cal- Tech to impress an admissions officer.”. At the Haus School of Business at UC Berkeley, Peter Johnson is the Director of Admissions for the full- time MBA program; he says the school looks for qualities that can be demonstrated from any university experience and across many fields of work. We’re working for people who can create, manage, and lead organizations in the future that put a high value on creativity and innovation. We look for people that are good members of the team. A lot of what you do during our MBA program revolves around team projects and activities, it involves case studies and so we look for people that have both good experiences but the ability to function well in a team environment.” He points out that it is important for the applicant to explain how his or her experience has prepared them for a top MBA program regardless of what that experience has been, “I think that a mistake that sometimes candidates make is they assume that we know what they have done professionally by virtue of their job title or their particular company and that is not always the case so explain to us clearly in the application what things they have learned, what skills they have gained in their professional experience to date is important.”. Johnson also suggests evaluating where you are as an individual in your career, not just going on the school’s averages. We have people from two years to twelve years and I think some times people who are in the two to three year range in terms of their work experience are afraid that that might not be enough. I would encourage them to not be put off by the averages and to again look closely at their own experience and say you know what have I learned and is this the right time for me to move forward with a MBA? And if the answer to that question is yes then I would certainly encourage them to apply.”. At the MIT Sloan School of Management, Angel Navedo is Assistant Director of Admissions. He says the students who get in are those who use their application as an opportunity to describe their abilities and strengths and the more specific the better. It’s like okay they have gotten over that but they still have to prove to me that this is someone that I want in our community. I mean involvement outside the class is really a hallmark of MIT Sloan so that is something that we definitely want to see. But we don’t want to worry about how these people are going to be doing in the classroom.”. Author, Richard Montauk says one way to do that is to re- take business related classes like accounting and statistics at a university extension campus. If you do take the time to overcome poor academic performance in the past it is vital to talk about those steps in your application. Take a look at the courses I’ve done since I was in college, notice what stellar performance I’ve demonstrated.”. Montauk recommends a holistic approach to applying. Each page that you submit should be used in the best way possible. After you’ve worked to get your academic and professional credentials in place, you still need to build the case for yourself. Recommendation letters for example should be active and detailed. The kind of recommendation that relies on an endless stream of adjectives but is example free will ring hallow. So hearing that Lisa is really great, really wonderful, tries hard and is loved by everybody is the kind of thing that is all but valueless here. Caring instead about how Lisa leapt in to save a project that was in desperate trouble and here’s how she did it is going to be worth its weight in gold.”. The stories, the experience, and most importantly the self- awareness of that individual and their ability to communicate it is what drives our decision.” Rose Martinelli in Chicago says a good narrative is vital to help admissions staff interpret the numbers and resumes attached to each candidate. Angel Navedo of MIT Sloan agrees. A top notch story is key to getting into a top notch school. And it’s actually the opposite. When I am looking and when I am meeting an applicant and when I’m reading an application I want to find reasons to like the person and I want to find reasons to reward this person.”. So assess where you are in your career, get your numbers where they need to be, sell yourself with a good story of your life and your goals and that acceptance letter from a top ten school could be addressed to you. This is MBA Podcaster, thanks for listening. And stayed tuned next time when we explore another topic of interest in your quest for a MBA. Podcast: Play in new window. Taking classes at home saves commuting time. That alone would make an online MBA degree program seem easy for a busy adult, who must fit studies around work, community activities and perhaps family responsibilities. Other issues must also be considered, however, making the ease or difficulty of an online MBA ultimately come down to questions of personal habits and lifestyle. Can You Get In? Getting admitted to an online MBA program is almost certainly easier than gaining admission to a traditional program. A 2. 01. 2 study by the Graduate Management Admissions Council found median acceptance rates differed dramatically between the two kinds of schools: 4. MBA programs. 82 percent for part- time online MBA programs. Applicants are much more likely to be accepted into online degree programs. Can You Pay for It? It may come as a surprise, but according to CBS News, quality online MBA programs sometimes cost more than traditional classroom programs. The higher price tag is due in part to the school’s investment in new technology. Another cost is the additional time instructors spend preparing for this new kind of class and the extra office hours provided for online students. Can You Handle the Loneliness? Studies done by Harvard and MIT found that 9. Harvard Business School Professor Regina Hertzlinger says the loneliness of studying in isolation is a significant factor, especially in MBA classes where collaboration is the norm. How Much Help Do You Expect? In its annual ranking of online MBA programs, US News considers, among other factors, the quality of student services provided. In an MBA program, student services are especially important for initial job placement and subsequent alumni networking that helps maintain a professional advantage. Students who enter online programs often have the benefit of an existing professional network. The connections to be gained from an MBA program by means of its student services still remain valuable. How Full is Your Schedule? Any MBA requires a specific number of hours of classroom time. Additional hours must be dedicated to study, research, team projects and writing. A classroom- based curriculum forces the student to set the time aside for studies by establishing the schedule for class attendance and project completion. Online courses may offer flexible scheduling, allowing students to fit in studies at their convenience. At the same time, some busy students may be inclined to procrastinate. How Hard is It to Find an Easy School? As of 2. 01. 0, universities accredited by AACSB International, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International, offered 2. MBA programs. These programs, recognized by the most rigorous accrediting organization for business degree programs, may not always rank highest in search engines, but they are the majority of online MBA programs. That means that the easiest online degree to find may not always be the most typical kind of program, which is actually quite rigorous. The weight of the evidence suggests that online MBA programs are easy to get into but sometimes difficult to complete. Successful online students must practice self- discipline in the face of appealing opportunities to invest their time at work or with family and friends. They need to endure lonely hours at a computer without the social stimulation of a classroom. They have to make these challenging investments for programs that may be as expensive as and should be as difficult as traditional classroom- based MBA programs. One benefit, of course, is that online students can keep their jobs and the related income throughout school. In this way, the online MBA program makes a student’s life easier while in school. Most important, however, is the long- term benefit of gaining an MBA. This credential opens doors, making professional life easier for the rest of the career. Program Director - Dr. Note: Students who have completed an Associate Degree or Certificate in Radiation Therapy can receive credit toward the Bachelor. In the United States, radiation therapists have a lower educational requirement (minimum an associate degree of arts even though many graduate with bachelor's degrees) and often require postgraduate education and certification (CMD, Certified Medical Dosimetrist) in order to plan treatments. Roles & Responsibilities. The therapist works closely with the Radiation oncologists, Medical Physicists and other members of the health care team. They effectively design and treat the course of radiation treatment, in addition to managing the patient's well- being. Radiation Therapists primarily treat cancer although other disorders and conditions can be managed through the care of radiation therapists. After the radiation oncologist has consulted with the patient and a decision has been reached that the application of radiation will benefit the patient, it then becomes the radiation therapist's responsibility to interpret the prescription and develop a treatment plan for treatment delivery. The process of producing the final plan rests with a group of specialized radiation therapists called dosimetrists. Since the course of radiation therapy can extend over several weeks, the radiation therapist is responsible for monitoring the condition of the patient and is required to assess if changes to the treatment plan are required. This is accomplished through patient re- positioning, dose calculations or other specialized methods to compensate for the changes. The therapist is responsible for quality assurance of the radiation treatment. This involves acquiring and recording all parameters needed to deliver the treatment accurately. The therapist ensures that the treatment set- up is correctly administered. The therapist takes imaging studies of the targeted treatment area and reproduces the patient positioning and plan parameters daily. The therapist is responsible for the accuracy of the treatment and uses his/her judgment to ensure quality with regard to all aspects of treatment delivery. During the course of radiation treatment, the patient will most likely develop certain side effects. In such situations, the therapists will communicate these side effects with the radiation oncologist, who may adjust treatment or give medications. Radiation therapists & medical dosimetrists (in many countries these two professions are often indistinguishable, e. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK) have a training in gross anatomy, physiology, radiation protection, and medical physics. They are highly skilled, highly regarded health care professionals who are integral members of the cancer care team. Radiation therapists call upon their judgment to either continue or cease radiation treatment and ensure patient safety at all times and are regulated by a governing body within their jurisdiction. United Kingdom. Radiotherapy is used either on its own or in combination with surgery and/or chemotherapy. D plan of the dose distribution across the area to be treated; External beam treatment - using ionising radiation, such as high- energy x- rays, the radiographer delivers accurate doses of radiation to the tumour; Mould Room - radiographers and technicians in the Mould Room produce immobilisation/beam attenuation devices for those receiving radiotherapy to the head or neck, as well as other custom devices for a patients treatment; Brachytherapy - the use of small radioactive sources placed on or in tumors to treat to a high dose while avoiding normal tissues; On treatment review - radiation therapists regularly assess patients while they are undergoing radiotherapy, prescribing drugs to counteract side effects where necessary or referring them on to other health professionals if needed.*.
